Autumn Picture in Yambol Town Park

Autumn Picture in Yambol Town ParkIt was a clear picture of autumn in Yambol town this afternoon as we strolled along one of the many small park areas. Leaves fallen from some strong winds last night in Yambol put a coloured carpet on the ground as we crunced our way along the paths. Another few weeks and this will be covered with snow.

Renewable Wood Resources in Yambol Town Centre

Renewable Wood Resources in Yambol Town CentreTrees are used all over the country in Bulgaria for many things, even in town centres the resources that trees provide are taken advantage of. This particular tree has its branches sawn off ever year and used for supports for tomatoes and other vegetables, then used as firewood for heating. The tree looks poorly right now, but next spring it comes back to life and provides more resources. How good it is to know that this renewable source of wood and does no harm to the environment.

Lutinitsa Galore in a Yambol Supermarket

Lutinitsa Galore in a Yambol Supermarket
A whole aisle in this Yambol Supermarket is dedicated and packed with Bulgarian 'Lutinitsa', the famous Bulgarian paste whose main ingredients are tomatoes and peppers. We make out own but many buy it from the supermarket, most locally produced. I counted over 50 varieties today to choose from. Lutinitsa is used as an accompaniment to many food, just as ketchup is used, but this is ten times better. The home made version is of course just as good. Many a day we just have Lutinitsa and bread as a snack. Mmm lovely, my mouth is watering right now!

Warehouse at Yambol's Railway Junction

Warehouse at Yambol's Railway Junction
This was seen today as I took Galia's son to work on the Sliven road out from Yambol. this warehouse is based about 2-3 kilometers from Yambol town centre and is seen as you travel over a bridge. It is a monster building and obvously isn't being used right now. Pity more goods aren't travelling by rail nowadays, everyithng is road based here at the moment without investment in rail services - Pity.

A Stretch Limousin in Yambol's Car Park

A Stretch Limousin in Yambol's Car ParkI caught sight of this stretch limousin in one of Yambol's car park as I passed it on the way to work this morning. It just didn't suit the environment, which was basically like a bomb had just landed with the road works and tree cutting in the area. I am not a fan of cars in the first place so seeing this I wasn't too impressed in fact I laughed a little of the money someone would spend or should I say waste on buying a car like this. Must be some celebrity in town today then or someone's home!

Yambol's One Lev Shops - Bargains Galore

Yambol's One Lev Shops - Bargains GaloreThese 'One Lev' shops are all over Yambol. Selling products from 1 leva to 101 leva, they are the cheapest of all the Yambol shops and sell everything from fishing rods to knickers. Galia my Bulgarian partner loves to take a wander in the aisles along with many other bargain seeking Bulgarians. No wonder there are lots of these shops, they are very popular die to the prices. They could turn into 'One Euro' shops soon with 100% mark up from the Lev to Euro - hope not!

Yambol 'In Your Face Marketing' - It Stinks!

Yambol 'In Your Face Marketing' - It Stinks! We popped into a small outback supermarket after work today and I was livid when we got to the checkout. Supermarket dirty tactics has well and truly arrived in this particular place. On the checkout counter they had taped a variety of sweets on the counter. They were big globalised brand named sweets, not local Bulgarian brands so there is a directive from the managers to push these who themselves no doubt had been urged to do so from their own peers. The people who suffer are the parents who have to say no to their children who are already grossly obese in this country. Bloody Supermarkets, I hate them worldwide for these devilish things they do!

Eggs back in Plastic Bags

Eggs back in Plastic Bag
Into a small local shop today and my heart was filled with joy to see that eggs are packed in plastic bags. It's a long story which you might want to be updated with on a previous post. You woll never find this happening in supermarkets now in Yambol. there is also the picture of the supermarket egg packing now in place everywhere here

Kids Running Across the Road

Kids Running Across the Road
I just love this road sign, not just because it is hand painted but for it's raw advice. It is telling you that there is a school ahead and that children are running across the road. Oh so true and good advice to kids with Bulgarian drivers on the road. To be far the state of the roads lend themselves to be driven over slowly anyway so no real need for the speed limit sign.

Looked After Shop in the Suburbs of Yambol

Looked After Shop in the Suburbs of YambolIn the suburbs of Yambol, many place are 'knock down' status but in some instances there are old buildings that have been looked after and maintained. This one I caught today is in fact a grocer shop but previously was a grand residence. You can see that the adjoining building have be demolished and it is a stand alone shop now. It serve the residents in the apartment blocks that are across the road from here. It remind me of an old British pub before they all turned into bar/restaurants and other thematic eating places. Also note the lack of advertising what a welcome relief to the eyes and mind that is! (Everyone local knows it is here anyway, why waste their time with advertising?)

New Pastry Shop in Yambol City

New Pastry Shop in Yambol CityIt is not only apartment blocks being built in Yambol, but small businesses serving them as well. This one is a small franchise which is almost ready for business. It is a pastry shop which will sell mainly banitsas and other pastry based food to a passing Bulgarian public. These places usually just trade early in the morning to around midday as the food is usually a breaskfast based diet. It will be a success as every pastry business I know here, and there are many, have queues outside them throughout the morning.

Yambol Garden Cafe

Yambol Garden Cafe
This is tucked away in the back streets of Yambol, a lovely garden cafe used by the local residents. This well tended garden includes palm trees and pineapple plants thriving in the winter sun.

Another New Apartment Development

Another New Apartment Development
Developments like this are scattered around Yambol town. This is a common site wherever you go as the demand for apartments is was high. This demand in the main is not from Bulgarians but from foreigners who are the only ones who can afford them . With the wordwide credit crunch I wonder whether all these new apartment developments will all sell or flood the market ending up unsold.

Evening Gathering and Talk

Evening Gathering and Talk
It is aproaching evening in Yambol town centre as all the local residents gather outside on benches to have a talk before it gets too cold and dark. This is a common Bulgarian acitivity througout most of the year. Sometimes they play chess or playing card on a fold up table they bring along. They're playing cards this late afternoon in this group. Lovely to see communities like this, and long may it live here.

View of Yambol

View of Yambol
This walk took me to the top of Borovets hill going past the locally well known Borovets Hotel. At the top of the hill is Radio Station mast that can be seen for miles around. The views are stunning of the surrounding Bulgarian countryside. This picture was take a SW direction, 35 kilmetres ahead just before the humped hills is the village Skalitsa where my farmhouse is. In winter you can see the whole of Yambol town lying beneath you.

Exchange Bureau

Exchange Bureau
There are many exchange bureaus in Yambol some are, let's say 'a bit dodgy' but this one pictured here is reliable, give decent rate of exchange and can be trusted. I used to use it when first coming here and have never had a problem as I was loathed to use the greedy banks. It is located a stone's throw from the Turkish Bezisten (Church).

Traffic Control Tower

Traffic Control TowerThis traffic control tower in by the junction for the main Sliven road leading into Yambol Centre. All the time I've been here I have never seen it manned. It has recently had a new coat of paint, so it must be in the Yambol Transport Division plans. With the massive increase in traffic in Yambol I'm sure it will have some use soon.

Drinking Water

Drinking WaterOn a very busy public walkway there is a simple drinking water fountain that works all the time. It is used by many passers by and respected. No vandalism, no graffiti, respected and appreciated in the long hot summers in Yambol town. The design is typical Bulgarian totally practical, no need for a fancy fountain. Also why pay for bottled water when this source is a good as any you can get worldwide?

A Couple of Apartment Blocks

A Couple of Apartment Blocks
It never fails to interest me with these Yambol apartment blocks. Each apartment has a different style as I try and work out what type of person lives there looking at the clues in the modernisation of each home. These blocks are situated not far from the grand Town Park of which all these residents get a fantastic view of from their windows.

Yambol's Hospital - The Accident and Emergency Centre

Yambol's Hospital - The Accident and Emergency Centre
No more than 200 metres from where I live in Yambol is the hospital, a massive complex. This is the accident and emergency centre where the ambulances run in and out frequently. Visits to the hospital luckily for me is only to see friends and family there, let's hope it stays that way.

Yambol's Caramel Bar

Yambol's Caramel Bar
Away from the town centre in a suburb in the south are is the Caramel Bar and it's outside seating area. It is hard to believe it is November and the outside area is still being used. There may not be anyone there this mid-morning, but every evening is full of families who gather together to socialise after work. This area is near the Capri Hotel and Sara Supermarket.

Yambol's Fine Fire Station Doors

Yambol's Fine Fire Station Doors
As I walked past the fire staiton this fine November morning with the sun blazing down, it was the fire station doors that caught my eye. They are wooden and in perfect condition. What a change from the western sterile metal electronic shutter types you normally find. They actually open and close faster that the modern automatic doors as well.

Gypsy Firewood Collection

Gypsy Firewood Collection
This is a common site in Yambol, especially this time of year. This gypsy, and it isn't just gypsies who do it, walk around the town picking up dead wood to burn on their fires everyday. It is free fuel and really does ring the sound of Yambol being a green town unitl you find that the other sack he is holding amound other materials, plastic that will be used to start the fire! Well at least it is not being done on in industrial scale.

Goodbye Yambol Trees

Goodbye Yambol TreesThis is the sign of new times in Yambol. The widening of a main road into the town centre is being made. This of course is purely to accommodate more and more cars. The worse part is that this used to be a lovely tree lined road. Every single tree has been chopped down. It remains to be seen if new trees are planted once the road has been finished.

Key Cutting Shop

Key Cutting ShopOpposite on the East side of St George's Church is a little box shop. It is minute and the service providedd is key cutting. We always use this shop as it is the best value. There are other key cutting shops around but this one is owned by an old master of the craft and his tools are the same age as him, around 70 years old. It is like walking back in time. He also repairs spectacle frames as part of the service.
