It has been a long summer in Yambol and at last, the waiting is rewarded in terms of grapes now being ready for picking. All turned into wine or rakia no doubt.

Grapes, a Common Sight in Yambol

Almost every townhouse has grapes growing over their outbuildings. It is probably the most common sight seen in the city.

Grapes Galore Hanging Over a Yambol Garden Fence

Grapes, Galore, Hanging, Yambol, Garden Fence,
Looks like a fine year for grapes judging by the look of these found hanging over a Yambol, garden fence. The temptation to pick one while passing when ripe is strong, but unneighbourly.

Nectarines, Grapes, Garden Table, Yambol,

On a warm sunny Autumn day with local fruit ripened it was njo surprise to see this outside on a table waiting for an indulgence. Not just the natural colours of the fruit but the complement of the Bulgaria table cloth it sits on.

Grapes Fermented and Ready for Rakia Making in Yambol (Ямбол)

Grapes, Fermented, Rakia Making, Yambol, Ямбол, alcohol

It is rakia making season in Bulgaria with the grapes being fermented out to go on an be distilled into the National Bulgarian drink Rakia. This was seen on the street where the hydrometer showed zero meaning all the sugar has been converted into alcohol and ready to take to the Rakia making stills in homes and rakia houses scattered around the country.

Check out my Rakia Site on this subject:

Rakia Making Still Active In Yambol

Our local rakia house is still very much in use with locals who are processing their grape wine. Thie smoking fires heating the wine will be going on right through to Christmas and perhaps beyond. This year the grape harvest wasn't that good which means poor wine that won't be drunk but turned into rakia instead. Nothing is wasted here.

Block 53 In Yambol

Look at that grape vine going up the side of block 53 in Yambol. Free grapes on all levels and the yield increases as each year goes by. Not by any means unique in Yambol, but then great Bulgarian apartment residents minds think alike.

Yambol Street Grapes Looking Good

It is rare to see any garden in Yambol without theri own vineyard. Many use the street as an extentiohn of their growth and why not. These partucular grapes are doing very well and should keep the owner happy for another year after processing for wine and rakia.

Grapes on the First Floor of Block 19

Grapes on the First Floor of Block 19It only needs a small space to plant a grape vine and the resident on the first floor of Block 19 has found one. A small area by the side of the entrance of a furniture shop. Incidently we bought our bed/sofa from this shop. One thing is for sure, if this happened in the UK, the council would be out with their book of regulations and ready to send out a fine, there would be a war with the shopowner and besides that the vine would have been vandalised the same day it was planted!
Here in Yambol everyone grows grapes wherever they can.

Grapes Gathering in Yambol Town

Grapes Gathering in Yambol TownI just love walking along the streets of Yambol, every house and home has something interesting to show. this luchtime my walk took me past a home with vines, (ever house has them). The grapes were being pick as I paused for the photograph. Being Bulgarian they saw me, climbed down the ladder and handed me over a couple of bunches of grapes to take home. This is normal here and by golly were they sweet!
