Time for Plums (Sliva) in Yambol


 It is that time of year where the plums have ripened in Yambol and a festival of products being made from them. Jam, rakia, compote, etc,. are just some of the products being made in many homes to see families through the winter.

Sliva (Plums) Ripe for Picking on Yambol Streets

Food for free on the streets of Yambol is nearing the height of the season. This particular fruit is called sliva or plum. Sweet, full of vitamins and free to pick by passers by. Many people make rakia from these fruits but would probably look for a larger fruit variety.

Rolling In Sliva Wine For Rakia Making In Yambol

This cart was pulled in by donkey full of sliva (plum) wine for the rakia making process that goes on not just in Yambol but the whole of the Balkan region. It will be ready for drinking around the end of September at the start of the grape harvesting season.

More sliva (plums) in Yambol, this time the big interest is in the vibrant colours they show when going through the maturing stage. So many shades to take in it really is a palette of colour in contrast of the green canopy of leaves.

Sliva In Yambol Ready For Picking

It is well and truely rakia time in Yambol as the sliva (plums) are at their ripest. They will be shaken out of the tree and made into wine then processed into rakia in the distilling houses scattered around. I can't wait to sample my own in a month of two when ready. It is a very good year for sliva crops this year.
