Death at Christmas in Yambol

 Deaths in Yambol at Christmas are at its height. Somehow the statistics prove that more people die during this period. Reality strikes big time with this with reminders shown in the picture.

A Sign Of Death In Yambol

This is often seen on gates of Yambol houses. The black material is a sign of death in the family of that house or household. I still feel quite sombre seeing these on a regular basis but it is part of an openness of mourning and celebrating their life in Yambol and Bulgaria

A Doctor's Surgery In Yambol

Looking at this Doctor's Surgery in Yambol I found it quite disturbing almost surreal to see various posters reminding us of the passing away of persons. This to me is not a good advert for a Doctor's business. I guess Bulgarian think differently to me when associating health with death.

A Camera At Last!

What a turn up this weekend. I did a favour for a reader of my blog, namely to go to the Yambol cemetery and look up a relative who had passed away in recent year and give feedback. It was something that I would have done as a favour as that’s the sort of people we are here and we did. We got information of the burial site, dates, addresses and pictures (ironically from a borrowed camera) and gave this back.

Soon after the person who asked for out help send a donation of $50 for out troubles. This was a total surprise and of course adds to the $20 that has already been donated toward a digital camera. With $70 in the pot I now can afford a digital camera and am on the point of buying one. It will be at the cheapest end of the market but as long as it does the job that’s all that matters.

So now time ticks away for more pictures to be taken, not just on Yambol Daily Pictures blog, but for all my blogs that have recently lacked original pictures as their source

A Busy Day At The Yambol Cemetery

I borrowed a friend's camera on Saturday for our yearly trip to the Yambol cemetery. It was Galia's father 13th year to the day of passing away. We tided up the grave, laid flowers lit a few candles and watered it with a cross pattern before reflecting on his life and moving on. Not a solemn day but a celebration of his life. The flower stall and candle shop were doing very good business today on this mild December day.

A Typical Yambol Family Grave

This is a typical grave that you would find in Yambol's cemetery. The picture of the husband and wife buried there with the details craved out. A little windowed box space at the base of the headstone to keep memorabilia and an old storage can where lighted candles are placed to protect against the wind. We quite often attend to my partner’s family graves tidying up, lighting candles and paying our respect, just like most other families do from Yambol and Bulgaria as a whole.

Yambol's Cemetery Entrance

This is the entrance to Yambol's cemetery where memorial posters are placed on anniversaries of the deceased family members. The photographs always tend to show them at their best usually taken when they were much younger if they died old. This is a good way to remember these Bulgarian folk who now are no longer with us.

Hearse Parked Outside Yambol Hospital

There is no consideration as this hearse is seen every single day parked outside the Yambol Hospital. All visitors have to walk past it to see their ill friends or relatives. It must be a worrying moment as they are reminded of the the possibilities of the hearse being hired. Sometimes I see a dead body in the back (in a uncovered coffin) whilst the driver parks up to get a coffee from the shop opposite the hospital. Death is not hidden here and no calls for being more discrete.

We Will Remember Them

This house was passed today and the was a black ribbon and poster of the member fot he family that had passed away recently. I small memorial placed on the gates of the homes that have had death brought about. This is seen itn he streets fo Yambol and throughout the country as it is the tradition here in Bulgaria.
