Georgi Rakovski Street Celebrated in Yambol

Having a street named after you is an accolade in itself, but further celebrations well after the original event happened. Georgi Rakovski Street currently has a picture of the man to remind locals of the history and the importance of the person.

Stone Head in a Yambol Street

Stone Head, Yambol, Street,
Here's something you don't see every day. A stone head just lying in the streets of Yambol. It obviously came from the communist era and part of a bigger gathering of statues, but now redundant.

Strange Metal System in a Yambol Street

Strange, Metal, System, Yambol, Street,

I fail to figure out what this strange metal system is on a street in Yambol. It is a permanent fixture going underground. I am guessing it might be something to do with water, but it remains a mystery.

Simple Boot Scraper on a Yambol (ямбол) Street

Boot Scraper, Yambol, (ямбол), street, muddy,

This was quite hard to spot when walking past. On closer inspection it was quite apparent hat this was a boot scraper cemented into a public walkway. Good idea, but there was no sign of muddy areas in the vicinity. Guess the owner(s) of the property it stands out must work in muddy conditions and use it before entering their  grounds

Another Hole On A Yambol Walkway

In all the years I have lived and worked here I don't recall one intance where a Bulgarian has fallen down a hole in the street. There is a very simple reasn for this, everyone here knows there are holes around therefore walk with caution in their step, especially at night. Why the need to cover them if care is taken?

Wild Street Flowers In Yambol

It is often the case where spectacular flowers grow on Yambol streets, many of them germinated naturally in the wild. It certainly cheers up the streets and causes me to pause and take a closer look.

Looking Down Georgi C Rakovski Street In Yambol

This is a view of a pedestrian way named after Georgi C Rakovski and runs right through the centre of Yambol City. Thousands use this path to get to and from work and the shops many living in the apartment blocks that run alongside and at either end of the path. It is such a pleasure to have a place where no vehicles other than prams, bicycles, skates, skateboard and battery powered children's cars roam.

Note:
Georgi C. Rakovski was a 19th-century Bulgarian revolutionary and writer and an important figure of the Bulgarian National Revival and the resistance against Ottoman rule.

Yambol's Pop Folk Singer Elena Yankova Remembered

Just south of Yambol city centre I saw a plaque for Elena Yankova who lived between the years 1825 - 1901. The road was named after her and this sparked my curiosity - I found out from local knowledge that she was a Yambol folk singer who had a big repertoire of songs which were published by her son Kolev. The over 200 songs were published posthumously some 12 years after her death. I find it so heart-warming that these Yambol folk remembered in this way. I assume she lived in this street all those years ago.
