Common land is in abundance in Yambol and this is put into production with the cutting of grass for hay. There are of course many livestock here in Yambol, even in the city centre. Hay is the mainstay of food for livestock and comes free with a little elbow grease.
Yambol is not the prettiest City in Bulgaria, but it does have a unique character which is now in the process of being captured by camera. What you see now in Yambol will be short lived in a world of change, especially with the EU strangling the heart and soul of Bulgaria's culture with directives and uniform regulations.

Yambol Basement Jungles
Usually you will find rubbish that has found its way through the grates into the basement. This of course turns into compost eventually so jungles are formed as no weeding takes place. I'm suprised that there are not tomatoes growing out of their knowing Bulgarians and their ideas for growing food.

The Yambol Wine Barrel Maker's Shop
This is the local Yambol wine barrel maker's shop, or the Yambol cooper as the professional is technically known. Not only used for wine I might add, but rakia. I don't use them myself as my own wine and rakia get drunk within the year of making, although many Bulgarians store their rakia in these barrels for years improving with age from the wood infusion. Also the cost of these barrels are far to expensive compared to the 2/3/5 or 10 litres plastic containers most use here for storing wine and rakia.

One Vine For Five Familes
This community vine tops the previous picture of a community, which catered for four families. This one covers five floors and each has a harvest to look forward to in September. Not enough for wine but more than enough to fill a fruit bowls on the dining room table for a few weeks. This is great to see.Monday, 13 July 2009
Sweetcorn For Sale In Yambol City Centre

There is nothing like the taste of freshly cooked locally produced sweetcorn. This is a sure sign of summer in full swing Yambol as the sellers are out in force. They are very popular and good to see children being bought some to eat as a snack rather than the fast food crap they are being forced to eat in other non Bulgarian food places. However, this freedom to sell simple good food on the streets might be stopped in the future as EU directives are being processed right now on health and safety. This make me mad to think they can do this yet let crap fast food through!

The Wine Journalist Restaurant
This restaurant called the Wine Journalist offers fine food and drink all day and evening. It stands out with the varnished soft wood exterior design. I only been in the restaurant once quite a few years ago, as you enter you walk into a basement area. All the menus are also in English, but cuisine definitely Bulgarian. It's not the cheapest or the most expensive place to eat and we prefer other places, but then that's not coming from me, but from Bulgarians who know better.

A Yambol Factory Security Dog
Picking up my partner from work everyday I see many dogs that guard the factory grounds. Their environment is basic, but they do get fed well with much of the food coming from our home and left over meals thrown to them as the workers leave after work. This particular dog's home is the barrel you can see in the picture. Their job is to bark at anything that moves and they all do. I dread to think what these dogs could do if the metal chain wasn't secure.Thursday, 16 October 2008
More Food Planned

Another walk another street another homemade allotment with plans for growing food or flowers. You see these all over the place in Yambol. Wherever there is a space for growing it will be used!

Yambol's Mercury Hotel

The Mecury Hotel, a popular place for Brits as they speak english there. The food used to be excellent a few years ago but not too sure nowadays as I haven't been there for two years. It is a ten minute walk from the town centre and is currently being modernised and extended.

The Dublin Bar - Yambol
This is the popular Dublin Bar in Yambol, frequented by many English here, in fact the central meeting point of British expatriates once a month. The reason? The food is mainly deep fried, the staff all speak English and the theme is Irish which is close enough to be a home from for most Brits. A 'Little Britain' right in the heart of Yambol. I personally avoid the place like the plague, for the simple reason I'm in Bulgaria!365bulgarianadventures
