Yambol Style DIY Bicycle Frame Repair

Yambol Style DIY Bicycle Frame Repair

Okay, so the mainframe of you bicycle has snapped, end of bike? Not in Yambol, for a DIY repair that works, strap a piece of wood alongside the severed frame and ride on. This will last for ages. I just love the way this is done, especially with a mountain bike that has front suspension forks!

Classic Russian Motorbike in Yambol

Classic Russian Motorbike in Yambol
I spotted this classic Russian motorbike parked up in Yambol town this evening. It is a MZ make, but a BG sticker had been placed over the MZ emblem. The topbox is a plastic crate, commonly used on pushbikes. The helmet is a leather type placed on the headlamp, again, the variety of helmets used on Bulgarian motorbike riders is diverse, that is if they are wearing one in the first place.

All New English Signposts in Yambol

All New English Signposts in Yambol
Since joining the EU, more and more signposts are now in English as well as Bulgarian. I just do not see why this is as Yambol is not really a tourist area. Eventually will it be just English? To me it just isn't necessary and yet another negative from the EU telling Bulgaria that this has to be put in place. After all Bulgarian and its cyrillic text is an official language of the EU, why don't they put Bulgarian cyrillic writings on signposts in the UK? If you are a foreigner living here, learn Bulgarian! If you happen to be a tourist, where will you find adventure of a new culture, including the language?

A Yambol Hairdresser's Sign

A Yambol Hairdresser's Sign
No censorship needed for this hairdresser's sign right in the heart of Yambol town centre. It is there for all to see on public display, or should I say pubic display?

Picnic in the Car Park

Picnic in the Car ParkThere are many blocks or aprtment block in Yambol and car parks right next to each one. It never fails to amaze that many Bulgarians just sit in the car parks having a picnic, talking in the evening. They bring their table and chairs out and amongst the cars parked there, often eat their evening meals there, sometimes with a barbecue and always with a rakia or two. Today on this warm sunny day the table and chairs had alrwady been set int he car park. In an hour or two they will be filled with locals.

Brick and Stone House

Brick and Stone House
Sometimes the simple things just din't get noticed and this was nearly the case I as walked past this Yambol house. It is just a simple building but looking closer the mixture of stone and brick on the lower part of the building just fascinated me. Why was this done in this way? It would be no surprise for the simpel reason that the stone was cheaper than the brick.

Yambol Solar Showers

Yambol Solar Showers
No need for electric or gas driven showers in Yambol homes. This big oil can painted black acts as a gravity powered solar water heating system. Even in the winter there is still plenty of warm sun to heat up some water. These are some of the devices I absolutely love in Bulgaria, so green so environmentally friendly and feels so good. By the way, they work very well, I've tried it.

Building Extension on Stairs

Building Extension on Stairs
It is quite clear that there used to be some stairs on this Yambol building then it was decided to build and extension on them. This is done in Bulagrian DIY style. It may look unsightly still works and of course no damp with the ventilation that it gets, how practical yet again.

Rakia Transporting Bike

Rakia Transporting Bike Another bike spotted parked outside the Yambol Rakia house this afternoon as I went for a wander. This was used for carrying everything for making Rakia. The wood in the plastic top box had already been taken out and was now being burned. Notice the bycycle's top frame bar, which had been cut and rewelded lower down so it is easier to get on and off. What is unusual about this bike is that it has a brake.

Home or Shop?

Home or Shop? There are many homes in Yambol that just turn their entrance and front room into a shop. This is a fine example of just that. Secondhand clothing seems the be the favourite home/shop theme
as the profit margins are good and they are non perishable goods. Also the registration and regulations inlvoved for this type of business is negliable. We often get our own clothing from these shops as they are juch cheaper than high street shops with bigger overheads. Besides we know most of the shop owners, this one only a few door away from our hom in Yambol. Hang on, why don't we do the same thing?

Bulgarian Timber Supports

Bulgarian Timber Supports
Bulgarian timber supports are commonly used in renovation by Bulgarian builders. Reuseable and when expired used as firewood in the winter. Mind you they last for years and years.

Redundant Yambol Telephone Booths

Redundant Yambol Telephone Booths
Back walking in Yambol town centre on yet another warm and sunny day, there are some telephone booths on the side of the main post office building. It is noticable that only one of the five booths has a phone. This is because the need for this service is almost uncalled for now with the popularity of GSMs (mobile phones). Everyone has at least one GSM. If calls are made from public telephones they are made from shops in Yambol that now provide this service.
By the way, the one phone that is here works!

A Hole In The Road

A Hole In The RoadThere are many road repairs right now, it's the right time for this as the weather isn't too hot. But by golly do they neede repairing. this was found today as I turned left at the junction. Luckily I wasn't in a car at the time. Many a car repair is needed after driving over these tyhpes of pothole! By the way, the state of this road is typical and quite a common sight in Yambol's increasing traffic filled roads.

Greek Goddess Diana's Dog in Yambol

Greek Goddess Diana's Dog in Yambol
Diana the Greek God of hunting is a favourite daughter of Yambol. She can be seen in many places but today I caught site of her dog. Diana was nowhere to be seen. The building where the dog stood was being renovated so I presume Diana will return on completion to rejoin her companion who waits obediently.

Business Not Too Good in Yambol

Business Not Too Good in Yambol
This shop was seen today and like many businesses in Yambol, has gone under due to lack of money and business. There are plenty of sites like this around the area in the back streets. This will be turned into a block apartments one day I think.

Tree Lined Street

Tree Lined Street
Yet another lovely sunny day in Yambol as a tree lined street is seen. This residential street is lucky to have such a beautiful environment and creates much needed shade when wlsking the roads in the spring, summer and autumn.

Rubbish Tipped

Rubbish TippedWalking along the road this morning I came across an obstruction. Now rubbish is a common sight in Bulgaria but this didn't make sense. The rubbish had been placed next to a wheely bin or could have been taken out of the wheely bin I don't know. In any case it was just left there. Most of it would be collected and recycled by whatever means by gypsies by the end of the day so that's half the problem solved!

More New Apartments in Yambol

More New Apartments in YambolThis was started about a year ago and is in the same street as out house in Yambol, about 1 kilometre from the town centre. It has been a major problem with the car turning into this road with all the building that was going on but now it is almost complete. You can see the project picture by the tree which isn't too far removed from the finished product.

Grapes Gathering in Yambol Town

Grapes Gathering in Yambol TownI just love walking along the streets of Yambol, every house and home has something interesting to show. this luchtime my walk took me past a home with vines, (ever house has them). The grapes were being pick as I paused for the photograph. Being Bulgarian they saw me, climbed down the ladder and handed me over a couple of bunches of grapes to take home. This is normal here and by golly were they sweet!

Yambol's Flowered Balconies

Yambol's Flowered Balconies
A town house was seen today with a typical show of the owners' love of flowers. This is a find example of what surrounds many homes although usually not so prominant and more often with an edible theme. It is now the middle of October and still lots of flowers and greenry to see here on each an every lovely sunny day.

Horse and Cart, Normal!

Horse and Cart, Normal!
Although the horses and carts are now banned from the centre of Yambol town, it is very much a common sight less than 1 kilometre away. This picture was taken this morning just 10 metres from the main Yambol hospital. As always Bulgarians love their picture being taken as you can see.

Slightly Posher Apartments

Slightly Posher ApartmentsThese Yambol apartment homes are a few years old now and in the street we live in. They are the new breed of apartments that are slightly more 'up market' than the 'blocks'. Again, well out of the price range for the ordinary worker now.

This is the tall crane that has been a feature of the Yambol skyline for over a year now with the big commercial development in progress in the town centre. It could be disassembled before Christmas if all goes to plan.

Yambol's Mercury Hotel

Yambol's Mercury Hotel
The Mecury Hotel, a popular place for Brits as they speak english there. The food used to be excellent a few years ago but not too sure nowadays as I haven't been there for two years. It is a ten minute walk from the town centre and is currently being modernised and extended.
